U.S. Virgin Islands District
USVI BSA Launches USVIsion 2020: Scouting Forward,
Seeks Involvement & Investment
The United States Virgin Islands District–officially USVI, BSA–represents the islands of St. Croix, St. Thomas and St. John.
At the close of 2016, the District was serving 225 youth through the dedication of 79 registered adult leaders and the support of one part-time Scouting professional. Local Scouting members had performed 150 community service hours, including collecting 1,750 lbs of non-perishable items during Scouting for Food for donation to Lighthouse Mission, a nonprofit on St. Croix that helps individuals and families during times of intense need.
Recent changes in the USVI’s economy have affected involvement in and financial support for local Scouting just as with other local community organizations. To address this situation, the USVI, BSA District is launching a bold new initiative–USVIsion 2020: Scouting Forward–with a goal to serve 1,000 young people between St. Croix, St. Thomas and St. John by the year 2020. In partnership with public, for-profit and nonprofit organizations, the BSA will assist the USVI community’s short- and long-term health and welfare, safety and economic needs by actively engaging youth in a variety of educational, cultural and character-development experiences as well as mentoring opportunities beyond the classroom.
According to available 2014-2016 statistics from the Virgin Islands Department of Education, there were upwards of 17,000 young people enrolled in USVI public and private/parochial during that time period. During that same timeframe, the BSA served an average of 246 young people. Together—the BSA and the local USVI community—can offer more opportunities to help prepare today’s youth to be tomorrow’s leaders.
