Silver Beaver Nomination Suggestions
  • Read the official nomination form and instructions, twice if need be!
  • Start the process early. If you believe a candidate is worthy, then give it at least six months lead time. It may take a while to receive feedback on some aspects of a nominee’s service, especially outside Scouting. If possible, submit the nomination 30 days in advance of the deadline. The council’s selection committee MAY ask clarifying questions if it seems appropriate before the deadline.
  • It is important that the nominated candidate has served in volunteer roles in service to the community AND to youth outside of Scouting. These need not be to the same extent as service to Scouting, but are nonetheless essential criteria for the Silver Beaver.
  • Professional accomplishment and recognition are worthy elements, but it is the volunteer service that is weighed most heavily. Yes, sometimes professional skills and connections tie into an individual’s volunteer service. To the extent possible, distinguish between career or occupational accomplishments, i.e. those “part of the job”, and those which are volunteer service.
  • Consider reaching out discreetly to colleagues or even a spouse/partner who may be able to share more about the nominee’s service. Make inquiries of the organizations in which the nominee volunteers.
  • Consult with your District Key 3. They may be able to contribute as well as serve as informal reviewers or editors for the submission.
