Scouts’ Tech Talk! Nova

Sundays & Thursdays at Microsoft Tysons

Microsoft has worked with Boy Scouts of America to design curriculae that meet Cub Scout advancement requirements. Microsoft provides this fun and educational service for free. The registration cost goes to support STEM Scouting programs – specifically the Microsoft STEM Day, and to provide scholarships (including transportation) for Explorers and Scouts who need assistance to attend these STEM events. If you know a scout or scouts who need the fee waived, please email education@ncacbsa.org

The NCAC STEM Committee is hosting the third STEM Nova Day on June 16, 2018 for Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and Venture Scouts! This event will have a theme of ethics in STEM. Microsoft STEM Nova Day

Microsoft Technology Center in Reston, VA

 This is an all day event for Cubs, Boy Scouts and Venture Scouts to attend hands-on classes and technical discussions pertaining to Nova Awards, STEM Adventures, STEM Merit Badges,  or STEM Explorations. Each participant of this STEM event may select two classes during registration (one for AM and one for PM). This event is modeled after the STEM Nova Event that was held at Microsoft Chevy Chase on 2/11/17. Registration is here.

Solar Eclipse 2017

Camp Snyder in Haymarket, VA

The DC Metropolitan area of our Council will be able to witness a partial solar eclipse during the afternoon of Monday, August 21, 2017. The solar eclipse describes the moon blocking the light of the sun from reaching the earth when the moon is aligned between the sun and the earth. To celebrate the viewing, NCAC is hosting a Solar Eclipse activity day at Camp Snyder on August 21 from 11AM – 3:30PM. National Inventor’s Day

Pinewood Derby Build Day

STEM Shack at Camp Snyder in Haymarket, VA

he National Capital Area Council recently opened up a makerspace at Camp Snyder called Sally’s STEM Shack.  The STEM Shack was designed with your Cub Scouts and their Pinewood Derby Cars in mind! Each 1 ½ hour session will provide Cub Scouts with an opportunity to learn how to design and build their Pinewood Derby cars using traditional hand tools (e.g. coping saw), power tools (e.g. scroll saw) and digital manufacturing tools (e.g. 3D printer, CNC mill, CAD/CAM). The annual Nuclear Science and Energy Scout Day is just around the corner! WATERWHEEL: Cub Scouts & siblings
1:30 PM – 3 PM
Learn the physics of levers (while working on requirements for Nova Swing), experiment with velocity of waterwheels, then build a  working wooden waterwheel (7.5″ diameter) in our woodshop to take home and experiment with further.

3:30PM – 5:15 PM
Learn the physics of simple machines (while working on requirements for Nova Whoosh & the Engineering Merit Badge), experiment with velocity of waterwheels, then build a wooden waterwheel to take home (1.5′ diameter and larger).

CIRCUITS & ELECTRONICS: Cub Scouts & siblings
4 PM – 5 PM
In this lab we will introduce circuitry, and work primarily with littleBits. Once familiar with the littleBits circuitry challenges, cubs will compete to drive mini ROVs, and then wrap up the session with asteroid mapping (requirement of Out of this World Nova).

HYDRAULIC ROBOTICS: Cub Scouts & siblings
5:30 PM – 6:30 PM
In this lab, cubs will interact with hydraulic systems – notably hydraulic robotic arms and claws. Cubs will work on Nova Swing as they design and build their own hydraulic robotic claw. Bears will also earn requirements 1, 3 & 4 of their Robotics elective.

This will be an interactive experience with hands-on activities for the scouts to work on Nova requirements —  led by Janet from Janet’s Planet (educational TV entertainer), Holly Melears from New World Institute, Vera Mulyani from Mars City Design and possibly Astronaut Abby!  This is a free event, but we ask that you register. Gem Mining STEM Workshop
April 23, 2016 | 10AM – 4PM
Scouts will learn about sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks, the formation of rocks, conduct a mineral test, and pan-mine for gemstones and/or fossils in the mobile mining trailer. This workshop is in function of the Cubs’ Nova Award Down and Dirty and Webelos’ adventure Earth Rocks. More information is here.
