Scouts educate about Leave No Trace for Kids in Parks Day

October 09, 2017

Scouts and scouters continued their long tradition of partnering with the National Park Service (NPS) by running a Leave No Trace table at Great Falls Parks on 5/20 to commemorate Kids in Parks Day. Scouts invited park visitors to play the trash timeline, a game that challenges players to guess the time it takes common trash items to decompose. It takes an estimated 450 years for a plastic bottle to decompose and 1 million for a glass bottle! These facts should convince us to never drop trash on the ground, to plan ahead by bringing re-usable water bottles, and to pick bottles and other trash items off the ground and put them in a recycling bin or trash can. Scouts also showed park visitors photos of the impact trash can have on animals and parks, and answered their questions about Leave No Trace. To conclude Kids in Parks Day, the NPS screened the Leave No Trace video on a huge outdoor screen followed by Wall-E.
Thank you to all the scouts & scouters who volunteered!!
