What to Bring: Compass and a sense of direction
Scouts will be paired up and compete for awards to be presented to the first 15 places in each event. The morning sessions will include: instruction in Orienteering for scouts new to the sport, competitions in one of three levels of orienteering courses, and a map skill-building event. Each scout pair will have an opportunity to choose two events in the morning. Competition will be broken into two age groups, under 14 years of age and scouts 14 years of age or older. After a brief break at 1pm, the afternoon event will be a 90 minute Orienteering score course. The event will be completed with awards from the morning events at 5:00pm.
This event is being supported by the NCAC and with the experienced help from the Quantico Orienteering Club (http://qoc.us.orienteering.org/).
Competition will be both on the scout pair level and on the unit level. Each Troop or Crew unit will have a unit score from this event based on the average of the unit's top five pairs from that unit.
Camping should be available within walking distance of the event on Friday and Saturday nights. Camping may limited to the first 125 Scouts and adults. More details on how to arrange a camping site will be posted on the event website soon.
Registration is to be done online at the unit level: register all of your unit's scouts at the same time, in one single registration if possible. Payment is also done online at the end of registration. please follow the posted instructions for registration. When you register your unit, you must have the following information ready:
- Scout's First & Last name
- Scout's age (under 14, 14 - 17 & 18 - 21 years old)
If your unit is planning to camp, you can pay for this at the same time as when you register your scouts for this event. The cost is only $1 per person per night (including adults). A note on Camping in Williams Field at Prince William Forrest:
- The park water in that area is shut off for the winter. Please plan to haul your unit water needs to the park as access to water is very limited and at a fair distance away.
- We will order portable toilets both for the event start area and in Williams Field for overnight campers.
- We ask all campers to park their cars as tightly as possible on the east end of the field away from the camping area.
- An area will be marked down the middle of the field as an access road, do not tent on it or your tent may be driven over.
- It will be okay to keep a troop trailer in your camping area
- Be considerate of your space, leave enough space for others, please be considerate to other groups.
- In order to accommodate everyone, we may be packed in tightly pending the number camping each night. Large cooking areas are not ideal in this situation, plan accordingly.
- No fires on the ground, please bring portable fire pits and carry your ashes out when you depart.
- This is a "carry out your trash" operation, plan to transport and dispose of any trash to a location outside the park.
This event is restricted to Scout Troops, Girl Scout units (10 & up), AHG and Venturing Crews only:
Because of the large volume of scouts attending, we cannot accommodate Cub Scouts or Webelos at this event.
