Camporee and Webelos-ree: October, 18-20, 2013
The Old Dominion District Fall Camporee will be held at Sky
Meadows State Park on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, October 18-20, 2013. Sky Meadows State Park is about 45 minutes
west out I-66. The cost is $20
Boy Scout Program
The Boy Scout program is centered on a Pioneering
theme. Saturday will be a series of
pioneering skills based competitions.
All participating Troops will be expected to provide staff and sponsor a
station. Smaller Troops can team up with
other Troops. Although we have proposed
stations, we are open to Troops that have pioneering station ideas they are
interested in running. The tentative stations are:
- Basic pioneering Knots and Lashings
- Build a camp gadget
- Make a rope
- Rope tackle to lift a weight of 25
pounds and pulling a log
- A frame walk
- Bulldogging (Timber hitch competition)
- Reactor transport
- Friction Bridge
- Goal post football kick
- Save the Log (knots)
- Chariot Race
Several Troops still have
Pioneering projects from Scouting on the Mall and other events. We would like Troops to bring these projects
to the Camporee. Please let us know who
has a project they plan on bringing.
We also plan on having a Troop
Catapult competition. Using one of
several catapult plans, assembled using only knots and lashings, there will be
a competition of shooting for distance and accuracy. There will be a Troop Campsite Gateway competition. Gateways must be assembled using lashing and
knots. Start working on yours now.
There will also be plenty of
other activities on site: an Orienteering Course; Fishing Pond; Over 17 miles
of Hiking trails, easy to do a 5 mile hike; Mount Bleak Historic House; and the
opportunity to participate in an OA Brotherhood Conversion. It will be a great weekend – let Rich Wink
know how your Troop wants to participate.
The Webelos-Ree will be held as part of the Fall
Camporee. Our Webelos will be able to
see their future in a Scout troop – as they have the opportunity to participate
in age appropriate activities. This two night campout offers a number of
engaging activities throughout the weekend.
The purpose of the Webelos-Ree is two‐fold:
1. It is designed to give Scouts a jump‐start towards earning a Webelos badge and/ or an Arrow of Light award;
2. The entire weekend is designed to inspire scouts to continue on the trail to
Boy Scouts and a new troop.
Fall Camporee Venturing Out Program - you name the adventure, we can Venture
Out on Camporee Saturday and do it.
Possibilities are 1) canoe Shenandoah rapids, 2) fish Shenandoah, 3)
raft Potomac at Harper's Ferry, 4) climb the Via Ferretta at Nelson Rocks and
go to the top of highest mountain in West Virginia while there, 5) bike the

Weather Mountain back to Camporee, 7) hike the AT from Bear's Den to Camporee
or Camporee to Linden for Apple Donuts and Ice Cream, 8) climb Old Rag, 9)

and I will help you get it set up. Invite
others to go with you. Come back in the
evening and show pictures and tell stories of your adventures. For those that want to do Venturing
In, we will have orienteering, GPS, and geocaching competitions to
participate in or be staff to run. Let
Adair Petty know what Adventure you want to do.
