Details

Join Gathering of Eagles and Eagle Scout author Alvin Townley for this special Distinguished Speaker Series to share the powerful and important story of America's Vietnam POWs and the inspiration of those who served as Eagle Scouts and endured Hanoi's most infamous prison, Alcatraz. As these POWs valiantly waged war from their tomb-like cells, the defiance, resilience, and unity of what became known as the "Alcatraz Eleven" is a legend brilliantly told by Townley.

Defiant has a deep connection with the power and influence of Scouting. This is a story you don't want to miss!

"These heroic men and women remind us how courage, devotion, and faith can triumph even in the darkest of times. In DEFIANT, Alvin Townley masterfully tells the inspiration and unforgettable story of our Vietnam POWs and the Alcatraz Eleven." - President Jimmy Carter

"DEFIANT is a riveting tribute to the unyielding men who endured years of brutal captivity as POWs in Vietnam and the families they left behind. The men of the "Alcatraz Eleven" are true American heroes and their extraordinary stories will serve as an inspiration for generations to come." - Senator John McCain

About the Author

Best-selling author Alvin Townley risked everything on a dream when he embarked on an odyssey to discover stories of inspiration, leadership, and purpose. His travels have taken him around the world and led to his nationally-acclaimed books, Legacy of Honor, Spirit of Adventure, Fly Navy, and Defiant, all published by St. Martin’s Press, New York.

Alvin’s adventure truly began when he quit his job to travel the country and write his first book. His pursuit of inspiration has since taken him to the halls of Congress, deep into Africa, into Middle East combat zones, inside the infamous Hanoi Hilton, through Pacific coral reefs, to Rocky Mountain peaks, and onto five aircraft carriers in three oceans.

He has discussed values and leadership with leaders like Michael Bloomberg, J.W.Marriott, Jr., Ross Perot, Robert Gates, Hank Paulson, Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer, and Jim Lovell of Apollo 13. He has also met with Peace Corps volunteers, Olympians, Navy SEALs, entrepreneurs, adventurers, and military heroes of all generations.

Alvin graduated from Washington & Lee University, worked in the U.S. Congress, and helped manage global strategy in the executive office of an 85,000-person international consulting firm. He speaks on POWs, adventure, military principles, Scouting, faith, and leadership, and he has inspired thousands of people across North America. His books have received praise from Jimmy Carter, Tom Wolfe, John McCain, Peyton Manning, Stephen Coonts, and many others.
