Tiger Cub Spring Recruitment

Posted By Patrick Ring, Monday, March 10, 2014
The NCAC Council is very concern of the year to year decline in the number of Tiger Cubs. This will have a domino effect of declining Cub Scout and Boy Scout memberships in the future.  The Council is making a full fledged effort to mitigate this effect by encouraging  all Packs to start recruiting kindergartners in the Spring.    The Council has dedicated the week of April 7 – April 11 as the Week of 1,000, hoping to recruit 1,000 new Tiger Cubs. The Council is hoping that Packs will hold a Join Scouting Night during that week.   Statistics show that Packs who recruit in the Spring significantly increase their Tiger Cub recruitment.

Patrick Ring, Vice Chair Membership will be providing JSN training this Thursday at 7 pm before Roundtable.   He will also repeat this training at the April and May Roundtables.   The training will be more of a discussion of how to better recruit Tiger Cubs and how the Committee can help you with this effort.  We would also like to hear from those Packs who have been successful in recruiting Tiger Cubs.   Attendees should be the Packs’s JSN coordinator and/or a Tiger parent who has shown interest in helping out.

Contact Patrick Ring, Vice Chair Membership, with any questions. His contact info is pring978@verizon.net and 703-674-6178

New Unit Position: Membership Chair

Posted By Patrick Ring, Friday, January 17, 2014

The NCAC has created a new adult leader position for each Pack, Troop and Crew:  Membership Chair.  This person would be your unit’s point of contact for recruiting and retaining youth in your unit and supplements the efforts of your unit commissioner and the Patriot District’s Membership Committee.  A brochure on this new position is attached.

The Membership Chair will be the your unit’s point of contact for Join Scouting Night as well as for the District’s Webelos to Scout Transition program, ie, Road to Scouting, held in September.

Road to Scouting Report

Posted By Patrick Ring, Monday, September 09, 2013

Road to Scouting Report

The annual Patriot District Road to Scouting (AoL/Webelos transition open house) was held on Saturday, September 7, at the Church of the Good Shepherd.

We had 10 Troops represented:  1865, 1533, 697, 1100, 1965, 1966, 1131, 1000, 1346, and 1347. All had well-done displays, flyers, and groups of Scouts to talk to theguests.  Each Troop had a Scout address the audience on an aspect of theBoy Scouting experiencem, and all the boys did VERY well.

We estimate we had wellover 50 AoL/Webelos Scouts attend, most with parents, some as a den withtheir leader.

The formal program consisted of an opening flag ceremony, a brief presentation by Ken Gaul on the Boy Scout program and how to choose a good Troop, followed by presentations by Boy Scouts on different aspects of the Boy Scout program.  Then the AoL/Webelos and adult leaders visited the Troops’ booths, met Scouts and leaders, and got a much better idea of the various Scouting opportunities available to them in our area.

Special thanks to Ken Gaul for hosting the event and acting as MC, and to John Merchant, who not only got us the space a tGood Shepherd, but was the senior District Representative at the program.

Road to Scouting

Posted By Patrick Ring, Tuesday, August 13, 2013
The Road to Scouting will be held on Saturday, September 7, at the Church of the Good Shepherd

(corner of Olley Lane and Braddock Rd) from 1:30 – 4:30 pm. This event is the District’s Webelos to Boy Scout Transition program where Troops showcase their units to Webelos via display booths. An informal presentation of the Boy Scout program is provided to Webelos and parents/guardians. Troops should email Ken Gaul (kgaul@verizon.net) and cc me to reserve a table.

Message from Ken Gaul to participating Troops:

Thanks for agreeing to help our Arrow of Light/Webelos Scouts get a head-start on finding a great Troop to join (and congrats for getting a head-start on your own recruiting)!  Attached is the general agenda for this year's Road to Scouting event on Saturday.  Note that the times are somewhat flexible, so we can let some modules go long if they're going well.

Some general information:

The location this year is the Church of the Good Shepherd, 9350 Braddock Road (at the intersection with Olley).  Park in the rear parking lot off Olley, and enter through the back door (preschool entrance).

Setups can begin at 12:45, and we're asking all the Troops to arrive by 1:00 pm at the latest.  There will be tables available for each unit.  If you're doing something that requires electricity such as a slideshow on a laptop, please bring an extension cord - we can't guarantee immediate proximity to an outlet.  Please try to bring 2-4 boys in class A uniform if possible - the guests like talking to Scouts a lot more than us old guys!

The format is very similar to the last few years - there will be plenty of time for the guest to check out each Troop.  There will be a short introductory .ppt about Boy Scouting, followed by the best part of the program - each participating unit can have a Scout say a few words about an aspect of the program.  We've found that it works best if each boy chooses an particular aspect of the general Scouting experience to talk about, rather than "this is why my Troop is the best!" (that quickly turns into a "I can top that" contest among the speakers).  The topics can include things like:

-- what's it like to be a first-year Scout
-- what are Scout patrols
-- what is summer camp like (we can do a couple of these on different camps; hopefully one will be Goshen?)
-- neat things I've learned about leadership in Scouting
-- high adventure - Philmont, Northern Tier, or Sea Base
-- what a typical weekend campout is like
-- specific activities (this can be almost anything - an especially fun themed campout or event, camporees, service activities, etc.)
-- Jamboree (if we have an attendee)
-- becoming an Eagle Scout (if we have an Eagle)
-- what are merit badges, and/or some neat things I've learned doing a particular merit badge
-- or just about anything else that would be interesting to the boys and their parents.

I will come around to each Troop and solicit volunteers and theme ideas during set-ups.  If the boy can talk for 2-5 minutes, that would be great.  If you want a boy to speak, have a couple of topics in mind, since we can't do 7 talks on summer camp...

Last year we had well over 100 guests, and we're hoping for a good turnout again this year.

We have a good mix of great Troops of different sizes and focuses from throughout the District.  The nine Troops signed up to participate in Road to Scouting as of Thursday are:
1966, 1965, 1865, 1533, 1347, 1346, 1131, 1100, 697

See you on Saturday!

YIS,
Ken Gaul
Patriot District R2S Coordinator
